Liquid Fleet has reported a rise in the number of employers opting for shorter term rental cars.
In today’s dynamic business environment, companies are increasingly turning to short-term vehicle rentals as a flexible and cost-effective solution for onboarding new employees during their probationary periods. This trend has seen a significant rise, offering businesses the agility to adapt to fluctuating workforce needs without committing to long-term fleet investments.
Fleet Lease UK providers have reported a surge in demand for these probationary rentals. Liquid Fleet, a prominent player in the industry, noted a 12.5% increase in this type of rental between June and November 2024. Organisations are utilising these services to supply new hires with reliable mobility options, such as petrol or hybrid hatchbacks and SUVs, ensuring rapid deployment without the financial constraints of long-term contracts.
“Companies can get their new recruits mobile within just a few days of ordering a car from us. And with longer term rental at eight months, it means they reduce costs when compared with short-term rental whilst avoiding the long-term commitments associated with contract hire.”

The typical probationary rental period now averages eight months. This duration covers the standard six-month probation and accounts for an additional two months required for ordering, production, and delivery of a permanent company vehicle.
Martin Potter, Liquid Fleet’s commercial director, notes that this trend has grown recently. He highlights that companies can mobilize new recruits within days using rental cars, reducing costs compared to short-term rentals and avoiding long-term commitments associated with contract hire. Additionally, providing new employees with brand-new vehicles can boost morale during their initial phase with the company.
“The employee is getting behind the wheel of a brand new five-door car which is good for employee morale when they join a new company,”

This growing preference for probationary rentals reflects a broader shift in how businesses manage their fleet requirements. Economic uncertainties have prompted organisations to adopt a cautious yet strategic approach to fleet management. By partnering with fleet lease, companies can effectively balance resource optimisation with employee satisfaction, ensuring their teams are equipped to perform from day one.
As the market evolves, the role of short-term rentals and Liquid Fleet’s solutions will continue to expand, supporting businesses in navigating workforce changes while maintaining operational efficiency.
